To make an appointment telephone the clinic that you want to attend
Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need to do to make an appointment?
Just ring the number of the clinic that you want to attend between 8.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Saturday to make an appointment. Actual appointment times are available from 8.00 am to 1.00 pm. We require that you have a positive pregnancy test or an ultrasound to confirm that you are pregnant.
How far pregnant do I have to be?
We prefer you to be over 6 weeks since your last period. However, we do make exceptions, for example, if you are suffering from severe nausea we see you earlier.
What if I am not sure how far pregnant I am?
We have ultrasound facilities at both of our clinics so we can do one if necessary. If you think you may be over 13 weeks since your last period and/or living a long distance from the clinic, it may be wise to get an ultrasound before attending one of our clinics as the cost and number of days needed to perform the termination may change.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No. You can make an appointment without being referred by a doctor.
What should I bring?
- Long T-shirt or nightie
- Sanitary pads
- An early morning urine sample (if possible)
- Your Medicare card (if you have one)
- Money (cash, Bankcard/MasterCard or Visa Card accepted – cheques are not accepted)
- Ultrasound and/or ultrasound report if you have one
- Doctor's referral letter if you have one.
How long will I be there?
You will be at the clinic for approximately 3-4 hours.
Can I eat and drink before my appointment?
You must not eat or drink (that includes sips and nibbles and chewing gum) for 5 hours prior to your appointment.
Will I feel anything?
If you have local anaesthetic alone, you will feel the local anaesthetic injections and period like cramping when the uterus is being emptied. If you have sedation (pain killer and relaxant), you can be sedated so that you are very drowsy and usually do not remember anything.
Can I drive home?
If you have intravenous sedation, you cannot drive home or drive for 12 hours after the operation. If you have local anaesthetic, you can drive home.
Are my fees claimable under Medicare?
You have two payment options:
Full Fee Option – You can pay for the service and then claim back a portion of the fee from Medicare (if you are eligible for Medicare benefits). This is the cheaper option.
If you are unable to raise the full fee amount, the Plan B option may be used. This option is not available if you are not eligible to claim Medicare benefits.
Plan B Option – You pay approximately half the fee, the balance is sent to Medicare and you forward the Medicare cheque to us.
Is counselling available?
All women receive counselling prior to the operation. This session is intended to:
- Confirm and support your decision to terminate or otherwise
- Explain the procedure, anaesthesia and aftercare
- Answer any concerns you have
- Arrange for ongoing contraception if required.
Can a friend come with me?
Yes, a friend can accompany you through your entire visit except for the initial part of the counselling session.
Can I have a female doctor?
Yes, you need to make this known when you are making your appointment as we employ both male and female doctors.
What if I am over 13 weeks since my last menstrual period?
The cost and the technique may change from simple suction curettage if you are over 13 weeks. For more advanced pregnancies you may be required to attend one of the clinics for 2 consecutive days for about 2-3 hours each day.
What if I do not speak English?
We have medical history forms and post-operative information translated into Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese and Arabic. There is also a telephone interpreter service available.
Should I have a check up after the operation?
We recommend that you get a check up 2 weeks after your operation.
